Membrane refurbishment for Hangar 3251
Background
In the mid-2000’s, the US Navy purchased a large tension fab- ric hangar for aircraft maintenance at Patuxent River Naval Air Station in Maryland. Due the size of the aircraft and the area around the aircraft necessary to work on it, the structure had custom sidewall and peak heights. Unfortunately, when it came time to refurbish the exterior membranes, the company from whom they purchased the structures went out of business. They needed a company that had expertise in providing membrane refurbishment services for any structure, regardless of OEM that could handle the extraordinary dimensions of this hangar.
Solution
Signature was a natural partner for the project. Inspecting, maintaining, repairing and refurbishing fabric structures of all shapes and sizes regardless of original manufacturer is our core business. We had refurbished countless structures from the company that manufactured these buildings and were quite familiar with them. Plus, we had provided previous services for other structures on the base and the Navy trusted Signature to the job right.
Details
Our approach included a system consisting large membrane panels that covered the existing membrane roof and walls in full. with a new tensioning system and architectural grade Ferrari membrane. The system was designed to minimize interior work allowing all hanging systems to remain in place. Signature was able to perform the refurbishment while the Navy continued to perform maintenance services inside.
